US Navy Hospital Ship Now In Jamaica

The US Navy Hospital Ship is now in Jamaica and is anchored at Pier 1 in Downtown Kingston. It is expected that free medical services will be offered to Jamaicans up to November 1.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher toured on-board the ship today and says, this speaks to public health partnership. Approximately 1000 hospital beds with 4 intensive care units and trained medical personnel ready to assist those with medical ailments. It is a move that has been lauded by the health and wellness minister, Dr Christopher Tufton who toured the ship on Monday.

According to Tufton, he says there is a pre-screening process to determine which cases doctors onboard will handle based on the patient’s medical history.

One of the commanders on board says Jamaica is the 11th stop on their mission which started in June of this year.

Many citizens were seen waiting to see doctors onboard the ship. From what they told our newsteam, the free medical service is appreciated. The US navy hospital ship will remain docked at Pier 1 in Downtown Kingston until November 1. Those seeking medical attention can visit the ship or the other two medical sites at Sabina Park and the Greater Portmore Health Centre.
