Data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) pointed to the rising use of drugs among students, including molly. It is a major development, which officials say is a significant cause for concern. The culture of abusing substances such as alcohol and cannabis in Jamaica among secondary students reportedly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton says the normalized usage has sparked a national response. The Ministry conducted a situational assessment in May 2022 to research the impact of substance abuse on youths.

Minister Tufton disclosed molly is one of the most commonly misused drugs and contributes to behavioral challenges among adolescents. He says this development is of great concern to the Ministry.
