Concerns have been raised regarding the vaccination of students for the 2021-2022 academic year, since teachers have been implored to get vaccinated in recent weeks.

President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) Jasford Gabriel, says while there is an uptick in teachers getting vaccinated, it is more critical that students receive the jab as their population in the education sector is greater. He says while schools have done well in reinforcing the protocols, movements in the communities have been a constant challenge.

However, some stakeholders in the education sector say more testing should be carried out before the vaccination of students.

Opposition Spokesperson on Education Dr. Angela Brown Burke says she’s aware of the concerns as younger children are testing positive for the virus. However, she notes more testing has to be done regarding vaccinating the youth.
