Small Fish Kill in Portmore Being Investigated By NEPA

The National Environment and Planning Agency, (NEPA) is once more investigating the cause of a small fish kill in the community of Bridgeview in Portmore, St. Catherine. CVM Live understands that this is a recurring issue that has been affecting residents in the area.

Small dead fish floating in a canal in Bridgeview and neighboring communities, residents raised an alarm, and a team from the National Environment and Planning Agency, as well as political representatives, visited the area to ascertain the extent of the fish kill and the cause. Samples of the water and dead fish have been taken for lab analysis. Councillor for the Bridgeport division, Kenard Grant spoke with our news team; he noted that Westport community has also reported that site.

Disaster Coordinator of the Municipality of Portmore, Shanique March notes that this is not the first time a fish kill is being reported in the area. Meanwhile, residents of the community say it is an annual problem that needs to be addressed as it produces a foul odour that may be harmful to their health.

It is speculated that a broken sewer may have caused the fish kill.
