Security Expert Lauds the JCF’s De-escalation of Hostage Situation

Members of the local security force acted quickly in de-escalating a tense and dangerous hostage situation on Monday Night.

Police reports indicate that two armed men entered a cash pot outlet with the intent to rob the premises but were interrupted when officers arrived on the scene.

With nowhere to run, the men reportedly locked themselves along with the operator and patrons inside the building.

Negotiators from the Jamaica Constabulary Force were called in on the scene which was cordoned off. The men were asked to exit the building as no harm would come to them and they had a right to an attorney.

The men did not comply immediately.

Senior Superintendent Maurice Robinson continued to urge the men to surrender advising them that more officers would arrive soon after and it would become more difficult for them.

Eventually, the complied and were taken into custody. The hostages were unharmed.

On Tuesday, detectives were on the scene to conduct their preliminary investigations. One security expert, Jason Mckay notes that the manner in which the situation was carried out should be lauded. He says they followed proper procedure by cordoning off the area before engaging in negotiations with the men.

He is now urging citizens to be aware of their surroundings and always remain calm if placed in such a situation. He say to panic and scream will not de-escalate the situation.

The identities of the men have not been disclosed.
