Rushane Barnett who was charged with the June 21 murder of Kimesha Wright and her four children in Cocoa Piece Clarendon, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentence was passed down by Justice Leighton Pusey in the Supreme Court on Thursday.

Justice Pusey ruled that 23-year-old Barnett be sentenced to life imprisonment, 61 years and eight months. The young adult pleaded guilty to the murders of 31-year-old Kimesha Wright, and her four children 15-year-old Kimanda Smith, 10-year-old Shara-Lee Smith, 5-year-old Rafaella Smith, and 23-month-old Kishawn Henry Jr. In Cocoa Piece District, Clarendon.

According to Justice Pusey, the aggravating factors surrounding Barnett includes breach of trust, multiple body wounds on the victims, his pre-meditation of the murders, and lack of remorse. The judge also highlighted based on victim statements, Barnett’s caution statement, and the psychiatric report, he showed no signs of mental illness. He further added that while Barnett was being interrogated his mannerisms pointed to annoyance. In addition, there was strong evidence that Barnett was linked to the murder. This was as the blood-stained knife and shorts were found in the yard; he was also the first person of interest.

Barnett appeared in Court dressed in a light orange Hawaiian shirt and sea green shorts. He also had a nonchalant demeanor as the verdict was passed down. However, Gwendolyn Wright McKnight, Kimesha’s mother displayed a sigh of relief as her eyes welled with tears. Meanwhile, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewlyn says this case was most transparent.
