Residents in St Ann take matters into their own hands after a man was murdered by a policeman because of an altercation that allegedly happened between his girlfriend’s relative and the deceased miles away.
A burnt car, tires, an overturned goal post and barrels, loaded rims of dirt are just some of the material residents in St. Dacres, St. Ann used to block the road after a policeman from another parish allegedly killed a man who had an altercation with his girlfriend’s mother in St. Ann.
The argument allegedly started after the mother who goes by the name, Merl went to a well to fetch water. While at the well, Merl and the deceased, Glester White reportedly had a squabble which resulted in him destroying her bucket.
Merl reportedly brought the matter to her daughter, who went allegedly contacted her boyfriend. The boyfriend happens to be a policeman.
However, the sister of the deceased says the dispute was not based solely on a bucket. She says anger’s been brewing between white and the other family well before the incident.
She says her brother was killed infront of his five year old son, who later related the grim events to her.
White’s death has sparked outrage among residents in the Alexandria Community who say the police who killed him has not been arrested.
They allege that instead the local authorities have shielded and rescued him. In retaliation, residents resorted to burning the officer’s vehicle and setting ablaze the girlfriend’s house. Deputy Superintendent of police, Ryan Gayle, says they have been negotiating with the residents of Alexandria.
He says the matter will be investigated but advises blocking the road and promoting violence is not the answer.
