Retired Cop Perishes in Hanover House Fire

The Police High Command has expressed condolences to the family, and friends of 89-year-old Elena Nisbett, a retired assistant superintendent of police, who perished in a fire in Hanover Monday.

Relatives recount the victim’s service to the community and those she encountered for work. All that’s left now is the gutted structure that was once home to 89-year-old Elena Nisbett. The retired assistant superintendent died in the inferno that consumed her dwelling Monday morning at around 4:30. The Sandy Bay Police say Nisbett’s home on Bamboo Drive, in Hopewell, Hanover went up in flames which triggered residents to summon the authorities.

The fire department was contacted; however, it was after cooling down operations, that her remains were discovered among the rubble. The retired asp is remembered by the police high command as one who gave sterling service to the people of Jamaica for over 33 years. Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances which started the fire. Her loved ones recall the beauty of her service and devotion. He says she was like a mother to him. Before her calling to the law she perfected her craft in the classroom. He says while the family has been gripped by grief, they are not the only ones mourning the loss of this valuable community member.

This makes two the number of retired officers to have passed in recent days in western Jamaica, the other a former inspector of police is believed to have committed suicide.
