The expansion of the Dovecot Memorial Gardens in St. Catherine has received backlash from residents in the surrounding communities. Residents say they are aware of several sinkholes on Dovecot’s property, which is connected to 4 wells that are used to provide water for their various needs.

They describe the situation as a “gross health hazard”, and demand attention from the Government of Jamaica and environmental agents. While dovecot has been granted an environmental permit, residents say they were never given any permission by the parish council for any burials to take place on the new extension.

Councillor Keith McCook says several organizations were warned to cease construction in the area, however, he says after receiving similar stop orders Dovecot continued their extension.
