The preservation of marine life is seen as a critical aspect of a country’s ecosystem. This follows a decline in the turtles in Jamaica and the Caribbean region. Groups are now working to maintain a sanctuary, particularly in the parish of Portland to restore the numbers.

There has been a decline of the sea turtle population over the years which has led to the development of several conservation strategies. These include protecting nesting sea turtles, protecting nests, and assisting baby sea turtles through hatching and re-entry to the ocean. According to the General Manager of the Alligator Head Foundation, Nickie Myers, over 1800 live hatchlings were safely released in 2018. This is due to an increase in poaching of adult turtles, their hatchlings, and even their eggs.

The call is now being made for more citizens to become marine conscious in preserving sea life and maintaining a protected ecosystem.
