The Portmore Municipal Council hosted its first general council meeting at its new building on Wednesday. The structure was completed in 2019 but has only just become operational.
After sitting unoccupied for almost two years after completion, the swanky, new Portmore Municipal Corporation building hosted its first council meeting where it was announced by Mayor Leon Thomas that 4 departments have begun operation on the ground floor.
The mayor says moving these departments into the building will save the municipality over a million dollars a month in rent that would have been paid in order to occupy four shop spaces in the Portmore Pines Plaza. Courtney Edwards, Councillor of the independent city area says these savings can be used in other major projects.
The over 190-million-dollar project, which began construction in 2017 was built in partnership with the ministry of local government. Though the building is still sheathed in zinc fencing, the mayor says there should be a grand opening early next year.
Councillor Edwards says this reopening should be considered a win for Portmore residents as well
