After an appeal from onion farmers in St Thomas who struggled to find buyers for their produce, The Potato & Onion Producers Association (POPA) of Jamaica has responded to their calls.
The farmers say hundreds of pounds of onion were left to rot in fields, crippling their income and expectations. The government has come to the aid of onion farmers in St Thomas, by providing them with a market to sell their produce.
Only recent farmers took to the streets, expressing their displeasure with having to dump thousands of their onions, which went bad, as they were of the impression the government was importing the produce. Chairman of POPA Sherman Campbell says they are interested in accommodating farmers with large-scale production in St Thomas. One farmer reiterates they depend on the government to provide them with a source of income while they invest in agriculture. Watch the report:
