A well-known Police Constable was shot and killed on the outskirts of Sav-La-Mar, Westmoreland. He also operated a bar. The Police High Command has since condemned the policeman’s killing. Family, friends and colleagues of Constable Richard Barrett are gripped with disbelief, following the murder, Friday night at his bar on Chantilly Road in Westmoreland.

He was assigned to the Little London Police Station. Police reports are that about 8:30, a man stopped by and bought a cigarette and a rolling paper from Barrett; then left. He returned with two other men a few minutes later; one of whom had a gun. Two of them reportedly entered the bar and robbed Barrett of cash and liquor, before firing several shots, hitting him.

They then escaped on foot. Minutes after, the constable was found lying in a pool of blood by one of his colleagues who he was to meet up with, along with others. His licensed firearm was on the counter. CVM Live understands the 47 year old, popularly known as ‘Officer Richie’ had been operating the bar for more than 15 years.  Colleagues tried their best to offer comfort. CVM Live spoke with Barrett’s step-daughter who normally assists him in the bar. One man describes Barrett’s death as a huge loss to the Little London community.

The police high command has condemned the constable’s murder and asserts that the constabulary is committed to conducting a thorough investigation. The high command also says the police will not be deterred by Barrett’s murder and will continue their focus on ridding communities of guns, gunmen and gangs.
