In response to the challenges faced by Jamaica’s healthcare system last year, the government has outlined key initiatives for the upcoming year. Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in his New Year speech, addressed the plan for the redesign of the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) in St. James. Despite setbacks, Holness expressed optimism that the CRH renovations would proceed without further hindrance. Previously, in 2019, the CRH Independent Oversight Committee Chairman, Archibald McDonald, had assured completion of renovations by the end of 2020, a deadline that was not met. Holness emphasized the significant benefits the hospital’s expansion would bring to the western section of the island.
Additionally, the Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine is slated for refurbishment and expansion this year. The government’s focus on healthcare digitization is another key initiative set to be implemented in the near future. Holness concluded his healthcare agenda by announcing plans for procurement to construct advanced primary care clinics in Portmore and Old Harbour.
