Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Pearnel Charles Junior, is dismissing as false, claims made by farmers of St. Thomas, that Jamaica is currently engaged in onion importation.

The Minister, in responding to a demonstration mounted by the farmers yesterday, says there is a significant increase in production by local farmers. He is however allaying their discomfiture, that the government is looking outside of Jamaica for the produce.  Charles Jr is dismissing claims that Jamaica is currently importing onions from overseas. This follows a protest staged on Monday by onion farmers from Heartease and Llandewey communities who claim the government has handicapped their production by importing onions. Minister Charles says while the government is seeking to increase the percentage of local onion production to boost economic growth for the country

There are instances where there is a need for more produce to supply other markets. The Minister sought to reassure St Thomas farmers that the Ministry will continue to provide support to those who would have been impacted by the loss of productivity. Watch the report for more details:
