Nuclear Medical Facility Reopens at UHWI

The Nuclear Medical Sciences Facility that has been closed for 2 decades is finally being reopened at the University Hospital of the West Indies. The facility is being described as a major contribution to the health sector, and is expected to provide higher quality health care, to Jamaicans. Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the facility will reduce costs since patients will no longer have to leave the island for certain medical support.

On Thursday June 30, the nuclear medical sciences facility was officially reopened after being closed since 2002. The facility is expected to play a vital role in the public health system by improving the diagnosis and management of non-communicable diseases including cancers and cardiac diseases. Speaking at the opening ceremony at the UHWI, PM Holness says the facility is expected to provide cheaper services for Jamaicans.

Crediting the staff and leadership at the UHWI, Holness says efforts to improve training facilities across the island are in an attempt to mitigate migration. Chairman and Director General of the Planning Institute of Jamaica, Dr. Wayne henry says the facility aligns well with Jamaica’s Vision 2030.

The facility is the only nuclear facility in Jamaica.
