NIDS Public Key Infrastructure Project Launched

The Government is hoping to revive the National Identification System (NIDS), with the roll out of new technologies over the next seven months.

This will see upgraded activities within the digital sector to support the act until a new bill is tabled.

This is a part of the government’s plan to create a digital society.

Last April saw the identification aspect of the NIDS ruled out as unconstitutional.

Now the government is moving forward in executing the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) upgrade activity highlighted in the act.

The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) infrastructure will also provide the security for national identification cards to eliminate identity theft.

Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Fayval Williams in welcoming the PKI, notes that the government is serious about harnessing the benefits of technology.

Minister Williams says that Jamaica will not be left behind in the digital switchover.

She adds that all Jamaicans will benefit from the ICT upgrade.

The government is seeking to table a new NIDS bill by March 31, the end of the 2019-2020 financial year.
