The National Identification System (NIDS) is on the verge of becoming a reality as draft regulations were submitted in parliament on Tuesday. Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, Floyd Green notes the purpose behind the draft is to obtain feedback from the government and the public sector before the debate commences.
The regulations addressed four areas, the first being the application, enrolment, renewal and cancellation of cards. Being the most targeted concern surrounding NIDS, the Minister notes security is also discussed in the drafts. Minister Green reiterates once NIDS is implemented there will no longer be a need for a different identification number as Tax Registration Numbers and ID cards will share the same unique identifier.
In closing, he made mention of the appeals tribunal which would conclude the regulations. Building on the spirit of democracy, he is asking for cooperation from the public in sharing their thoughts on the drafted regulations posted on their website. The regulations are expected to be in place by the first quarter of the new financial year, in April.
