As Tropical Storm Grace moves away from the island, Jamaicans are left to pick up the pieces, however, some residents of the New Haven community are breathing a sigh of relief as they were not severely impacted as they normally would be.
The New Haven community is considered an area prone to flooding, and over the years, residents have had their homes inundated with mud, debris, and filth as the nearby Duhaney River overflows its banks.
Residents say this time around the water receded quickly, in comparison to last October 2020, this they say is due to recent drainage work and cleaning done in the area that has to an extent stopped the recurring flooding that takes place whenever there is persistent rainfall. Residents say the gully in the area is now free flowing when it rains and they are pleased to have the normal flooding issues to deal with.
Mayor of Kingston, Delroy Williams, toured the community on Wednesday, August 18. The Mayor says the Municipality had put a lot of effort into the cleaning initiative, even with limited resources, he also notes that he is aware that further work must be done.
