A bittersweet occasion for the growing membership of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), who on a day designed to celebrate and welcome 109 new firefighters as part of the graduating batch, mourned the recent tragic loss of one of its number.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade intake 24 ceremony saw Minister of Local Government Desmond Mckenzie compare indiscipline motorists with gunmen. The comments come just days after the brigade suffered tragically, as 25-year-old Larenzo Douse, was crushed between his fire truck and an out-of-control vehicle in St Ann. What is known however, despite a decrease in the number of fire related deaths relative to the same period last year, other acts of indiscipline are of significant challenge to the Brigade, with close to 100 cases of suspected arson and hundreds of electrical short circuits due to illegal connections. The minister said that Government intend to construct at least 8 new fire stations across the country and is committed to improving the modern capacities of the brigade.
