‘Soon to return’ that is what Northwest St Elizabeth MP JC Hutchinson told Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) supporters about former JLP Member of Parliament turned Independent Candidate, George Wright, who resigned from the party after he was embroiled in allegations of physical abuse.

The first-time Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central handed in his resignation in 2021 after he was accused of beating a woman in a video that went viral. He came under fire and although there were no charges against him or confirmation that he was the man in the video, suffered continued backlash since.

On Sunday, the JLP’s Deputy Leader for Area Council 4, JC Hutchinson hinted to party supporters that Wright could soon return. He was lauding the work of the JLP in securing a clean sweep of the Westmoreland seats in the last general election.

Some critics had suggested that while Wright is now an independent candidate, he could return to the JLP after some time. Wright now sits among the opposition members in the Parliament but is not a member of the majority opposition, People’s National Party (PNP). However, he was the first JLP candidate since 1980 to successfully secure the coveted seat, long controlled by the PNP.

Hutchinson told supporters every seat can be won by the governing JLP. This ahead of an upcoming local government election. Just months prior in February it was reported that Hutchinson turned away the new MP from an area council meeting in Westmoreland Central allegedly adding it was not opened to outsiders.
