In response to the spate of violence across the nation’s schools, Education Minister Fayval Williams says the ministry will be targeting grade ten students. This as she says a recent survey, shows they’re the ones involved in most disputes.
The minister notes more resources will be provided to schools to help steer students. The wave of violence in some schools has left many concerned about the behavioural problems among students following their return to the physical classroom. Education Minister Williams says it not for a lack of support adding the ministry provided psychosocial support systems in schools prior to the pandemic.
Minister Williams notes since the pandemic additional support has also been provided. She maintains the ratio of students to councilors is high, and more social workers are needed. The minister also outlined the approach that will be taken for some schools. Minister Williams says when it comes to gender based violence in schools, teachers should be given the proper tools to deal with boys and girls as they differ in behaviour.
She says with schools fully be reopened, the ministry will be redeploying resource officers.
