Several ministries across the island are now making provisions for victims of gender-based violence, as Gender Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange highlights the need for a more holistic approach to the issue. She says gender-based violence is everybody’s business; therefore each Ministry will need to play its part in reducing cases. Minister Grange and Education Minister Fayval Williams on Thursday, signed a memorandum of understanding to provide better assistance to victims of gender-based violence.
They also secured the support of several other ministries, to achieve a holistic approach when addressing the issue of violence against women and girls. Minister Grange says a 2016 study revealed, a sizable percentage of women who are affected by gender-based violence do not report it. Grange says her ministry used the findings from that study to create new strategies to prevent and combat gender-based violence. She notes victims have been benefiting from several shelters, to not only house them but also help with rehabilitation.
