Montague Urges Greater Access to Licenced Firearms

Former National Security Minister Robert Montague is calling on the Government to grant greater access to Licenced Firearms and level the playing field. The appeal comes during his contribution to the Debate on the new Firearms Bill. 

While noting the bill is part of the solution to the country’s crime problem, He objected to provisions that make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to secure gun licences. Montague also called for the immediate resumption of hanging for gun crimes.

The St. Mary western Member of Parliament says any decent, law-abiding citizen with a clean police record, no mental issues, or domestic violence conviction should be able to acquire a gun licence within 45 days of applying. Montague says of an average 30,000 licensed firearm holders over the last 10 years, only one per cent have been murdered.  He explains that the long wait for a licence sometimes criminalizes the process. 

Meanwhile, Montague is calling for the amendment of section 87 of the new firearms bill, stressing that the power of appeal to the National Security Minister should not be excluded. Watch the full report:
