The Education Minister, Fayval Williams announced that students will have an additional two years at the high school or secondary level, noting it will give students a second chance at being qualified for the labour force. this after an education Act that was passed in 1965 was brought to the fore in the Parliament Tuesday, November 9, by the Education Minister.
Education Minister Fayval Williams in the Lower House announced a mandate backed by Cabinet for secondary school students to have a total of 7 years in high school.
The Minister explains that while the traditional Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination, (CAPE) will still exist in 6th form, two additional programs will be added to better facilitate students. She noted that the Ministry does not plan to make any adjustments to this graduation season, however further conversations can be expected with stakeholders.
According to Minister Williams students who matriculate to 6th form without attaining core Caribbean Secondary Examination Council, (CSEC) subjects, will be provided that opportunity. However, Shadow Minister in Education, Dr. Angela Brown-Burke, raised concerns regarding the additional high school years, stating other institutions accept students with a grade 11 education.
