According to Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton the Delta variant has been confirmed to be on the island on Wednesday, August 18, that of 40 samples tested, 22 have returned positive for the highly transmissible Delta variant. The Minister took to social media, again urging Jamaicans to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, as the presence of the Delta variant represents another phase of the virus that the country will have to traverse.
Putting weeks of suspicion at rest, the Minister notes there has been speculation that the variant was long in the island and says this was stated publicly. The Minister notes that the variant is highly contagious, therefore it can be spread and contracted much easier. He notes the importance of not overcrowding the already burdened health care systems.
