Minister of Mining Floyd Green reveals an impressive 2.3% growth in the second quarter of 2023, through the growth of the mining sector.
“Our mining sector is on fire! In fact, the 2% growth we celebrated last quarter is mainly attributed to a jaw-dropping 164% increase in our mining sector, with a significant boost in aluminum production at the Jamalco plant,” he proudly exclaimed.
A few years back, the Jamalco plant faced a major setback with a devastating fire that severely impacted production. Now, their impressive comeback is a driving force behind Jamaica’s economic revival.
Minister Green also shared that exports of limestone have skyrocketed by more than 100%, and the Ministry has plans to develop an industrial minerals policy that will support sustainable growth in the sector.
“We’re committed to nurturing our mining sector and exploring new markets. In fact, I’ve tasked our ministry to present a proposal for an industrial minerals policy to Cabinet. This policy will address essential aspects like limestone, which is experiencing a substantial surge in demand. We need the right framework to ensure its sustainable growth,” he emphasized.
