May Pen Treated to Major Clean-up

A major one-day cleaning and sanitation operation was conducted across sections of Clarendon. The initiative was spearheaded by the Clarendon Municipal Corporation and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

As the parish grapples with severe garbage pile up, especially in May Pen, Mayor Winston Maragh welcomes the push; the NSWMA donated eleven trucks to the Clarendon Municipal Corporation for a major cleaning operation in the parish. The initiative is aimed at clearing the accumulation of garbage in Clarendon due to a shortage of resources.

Mayor Maragh says the operation is primarily focused on clearing the chronic pileup of garbage.  He is elated about the one-day initiative and says the results of the operation will be assessed to see if other days can be included. The cleaning operations began in the May Pen town centre and then to the outer areas of the parish.

Regional Operations Manager for the NSWMA, Edward Muir urged residents to properly dispose of their waste to reduce the risk of a public health threat. He also says they intend to increase the number of units in Clarendon given the population growth. Five schools in the area are to be targeted as part of the operation to educate them on proper disposal procedures.

The municipality has two other clean-up initiatives: the drum at the gate and the baggage which were launched last year.
