As the reopening of schools approaches, residents of Maxfield Avenue are worried that children may not be able to cross a major thoroughfare in the area. Residents complain that for almost four years, they have had a major problem crossing on Maxfield Avenue.

Councilor for the Whitfield Town Division Eugene Kelly says this has resulted in many accidents that could have been avoided with signalized pedestrian crossings.

Residents say the problem started when the road was expanded. However, they believe the pedestrian volume, was not taken into consideration. Though there is a pedestrian crossing, they say motorists do not yield, and it can take up to 30 minutes to get to the other side.

The disabled within the community say they too have been given no consideration. A disabled woman from the district says she becomes fearful whenever she approaches the crossing.
