There is a need to examine local infrastructure as a part of the country’s readiness and response to Natural Disasters. Local Government and Community Development Minister Desmond Mckenzie says this is just one of several issues to be addressed in ensuring resilience in Jamaica’s cities and towns.

He says this begins with proper planning. Mckenzie notes that the Government now has to ensure that it approves of construction of buildings that can resist the elements. According to him, this is in line with the standards of developed countries.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Nations of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Protection adds that the Government must lead the conversation on Disaster Resilience.
