Upon the arrival of  37 Haitians by boat in Portland on Monday, immediate measures were taken to provide support to the individuals and ensure their isolation and security until law enforcement arrived. People in these parts are all too aware of the dangers of turning a blind eye despite wanting to help their Caribbean neighbours.

As fate would have it a boat carrying adults and children drifted ashore on the popular Boston beach in Portland. And while the Jamaicans chimed in to help their soon-confirmed Haitian neighbours, there was skepticism and concern for those aboard.

While Jamaica and Haiti have had a cordial relationship there’s also that aspect of security, that challenge in clamping down fully on the weapons and drug trade between the two countries. It’s partly why the manager of the Boston beach ensured none of the travelers left the area before the authorities arrived Monday when their boat came to shore.
