A study is being conducted in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund’s (UNICEF) U-Report and the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network (JYAN), to survey nutritional behaviours among Jamaican youth and 88 percent of the participants say they want to see warning labels placed on foods high in sugars and fats.
More than 800 Jamaicans between 13 and 29 have so far participated in the survey which, can be accessed on UNICEF’S U-Report page or via text message. The findings will be used to push a nutrition policy in schools.
Programmes Coordinator for the (JYAN) Shannique Bowden says the preliminary findings show that more Jamaican youth surveyed are in favour of front of package labeling. She says the survey has unearthed that more Jamaican youth are inclined to reading labels and checking the nutritional facts on food packages. She says this is a sign that there’s a greater level of awareness among the youth regarding healthy eating.
