With no additions to the fleet in over 6 years, Communications Manager for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), Cecil Thoms, is urging the public to be more mindful of the impact deliberate damage to the existing fleet has on the company’s ability to serve the public. He notes that stone throwing, continues to pose a significant problem.
In June of this year, the government announced that it will be spending approximately $6.4 million USD to acquire 50 buses to increase the JUTC fleet in the Kingston Metropolitan Region (KMTR). Of the total, 45 will be diesel buses, while the remaining five will be electric. Thoms is concerned about how continued acts of vandalism may impact the deployment of new assets. Thoms also provided an update after police cracked a fuel stealing ring earlier this year. Mr. Thoms is urging persons who are aware of instances of vandalism to provide the necessary details to Crime Stop.
