JLP Reacts to Opposition Environmental Protection Backlash

The Jamaica Labour Party, (JLP) responded to the the alleged poor management of environmental protection by the Government, by Opposition leader, Mark Golding.

Hitting back to defend their leader, Prime Minister Andrew Holness on the Cabinet’s environmental achievements, Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party’s Public Relation Committee, Senator Matthew Samuda says the Opposition has no room to speak about environmental protection after their alleged mismanagement for over 18 years.

He says Golding does not get a free pass for the alleged destruction under the People’s National Party, (PNP) noting he was a member of the cabinet back then. Senator Samuda noted that the largest destruction, by hectares of mangrove forest in Jamaica, took place under the PNP’s 18 year leadership. And noted that it was the PNP Administration that told the country that they had intended to destroy Goat Island.

He lauded the Jamaica Labour Party for their efforts in protecting the environment, surpassing the United Nations target to conserve 15% of landmass per country. Senator Samuda says Jamaica doubles this milestone with over 30%, he says the Government has embarked on a process to look at fines and punitive measures across all legislation.
