Jamaicans Split on Lockdown Effectiveness

With two of the three consecutive weekend lockdowns now behind the country, citizens are split whether the measure is working. CVM LIVE spoke to vendors and shoppers in two major towns about the curfew.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness says the country will know in another three to four weeks whether the weekend lockdowns were effective in controlling the spread of the coronavirus.

Videos of congested business areas, bumper-to-bumper traffic, and long lines at supermarkets and crowded markets have been spreading on social media.

And with it comes the question of whether or not the coronavirus is spreading too?

In Ocho Rios, St. Ann, shoppers complain that there is a mad rush due to the limited shopping time which is made worse with the increase in the town’s population. But others argue that citizens are panic buying. The lockdowns have reignited calls for more financial assistance to needy citizens.
