Gunshot Victims Tend To Burden Hospital Resources

The Administration at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James has had to readjust its mechanisms last weekend to provide effective treatment to gunshot victims seeking assistance.

Between Saturday and Sunday, the Cornwall Regional Hospital has seen 9 cases of gunshot victims.

The areas that were previously re-purposed for COVID-19 care had to be re-utilized in order to house the patients.

Clinical Coordinator of the Western Regional Health Authority, Dr. Delroy Fray, says these unnecessary injuries greatly impact the hospital’s resources and manpower.

He says depending on the severity of the injuries sustained in a single case, it may take up to 10-12 hours in an operating theater, 2 or more surgeons with supporting staff, and an average of 10 to 12 people.

Senior Medical Officer at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, Derek Harvey, says in recent weeks there has been an increase in gunshot victims to the facility.
