Several residents of Grants Pen, St. Andrew are now seeking a new place to call home after they were on Tuesday evicted from land allegedly owned by a company. They are also appealing to their Member of Parliament Delroy Chuck to lend a hand. Two families, who up to Sunday, February 27, called this place home, are now struggling to piece together their once solid structures, in another area, of course. An elderly woman, who says she’s been operating a food stall for over 30 years on a section of the land, has also had to relocate.
On September 23, they were ordered by a company called Cromo Investments Limited to quit and deliver up possession of the premises at grants pen road on or before October 31, but the notice was extended to December 1, 2021. One of the residents, who had been living there for 4 years, laments not being able to work at the moment, having to care for three young children; she relies on her partner who the notice was served to.
The company provided a truck to move the residents’ belongings. While our news team listened to the plight of the residents, a representative from the company arrived. He says, he’s aware of eviction notices served to the residents since 2019. He however says the company now needs its land, noting that the entity not only owns the land but has been paying its taxes for years.
