Minister of State in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Homer Davis and members of the Rural Water Supply made a second visit on July 13 at the Underground Recharge System at the Innswood Water Facility, in St. Catherine, following their visit made earlier this year.
The tour was done as the Government seeks to replicate the facility across the island. The structure which was constructed in 2017 was recent recently refurbished. The Ministry says the refurbishing and construction of the pilot racked up billions of dollars.
Managing Director of the Rural Water Supply Audley Thompson, says approximately 5 million gallons of water is taken from the Rio Cobre and he says the recharging water system acts as a reservoir and helps to prevent saline intrusion, among other things.
Thompson says the facility has been refurbished recently but notes there were issues in the past with vandals.
In the meantime, Minister Davis says this project is in alignment with the 2030 mandate of providing full access to water.
