Government in Support of Further Investigation into NPL

Minister of Education, Fayval Williams has responded to the damning reports into the affairs at the state-run Nutrition Products Limited, (NPL). In an address at a post-cabinet briefing on Wednesday, September 22, the Minister said ‘let the chips fall where they may.’

The Minister says she has taken note of the Auditor General’s report into the affairs at the state-run Nutrition Products Limited (NPL). The report highlights serious breaches of the public body’s management and accountability act. Minister Williams note that upon reading the report, further investigation may be required from the necessary authorities that are empowered to take legal action base on their findings.

In terms of action taken, Minister Williams notes that a new board was put in place in December 2020 after several breaches were discovered. The issue of an external secretary being paid 7.4 million dollars to take minutes at board meetings from April 2017 to January 2021 was flagged and discontinued by the new board.

Additionally, Minister Williams announced that Cabinet has approved the establishment of an enterprise team for the privatization of NPL, which is to be executed by the Development Bank of Jamaica, (DBJ).
