A tragedy on the Pen Hill Road in Manchester on August 18, plunged several families in mourning as a truck carrying market vendors overturned, killing all but one of its five passengers. The driver of the truck allegedly lost control of the vehicle in negotiating a corner.

Reports from the police are that about 2:15 a.m., the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a corner when he lost control of the vehicle overturned and slammed into a concrete bus stop. By daylight, market produce evidenced the early morning disaster.

Four of the five passengers, three of whom were higglers and the driver were killed in the accident. Dead are Donovan Peart, Denisha Williams, Suzie Dunwell, and Leilia Samuda Johnson. Christiana businessman Lennox Powell says the incident is a massive loss. He noted that just a few months ago another truck turned over in the area.

President of the Manchester Association of Grants Societies, Jones Oliphant, says four families have suffered a tragic loss and this will also impact persons who purchase produce in the area. Meanwhile, Lennox is appealing to motorists to exercise extreme caution when using the Pen Hill road.
