Some St. James schools were forced shut again following the recent flood rains that muddied face-to-face plans. At least one of the schools plagued by flooding over the years received well needed clean-up support from the authorities when CVM Live visited on Tuesday, November 9.
Principal of the Mount Alvernia High School sent home students and issued an advisory for them to continue virtual learning, while she pulled out her emergency machinery, to battle pools of water and major inconvenience due to flood rains.
The President of the Homeschool Association, a past student herself, says it is time to get things right; she noted that whenever it rains like it did recently, there is usually an issue with mosquitos and other environmental effects.
Most disturbing is what is likely to seep above the surface, when the children are back. Principal Whine says the bigger tasks are for the Ministries of Health and Education and the Municipal Cooperation, while she works with the neighbours on student matters.
In the meantime, there is one aspect of the overall problem that needs all hands on deck, as she notes this is definitely unhealthy. In October the Government announced the re-opening of schools which should have started on Tuesday, November 9.
