With the new Firearms Act slated to take effect shortly, the Firearms Licensing Authority (FLA) is embarking on a sensitization campaign to educate Jamaicans on the new provisions under the legislation.

Fifteen years imprisonment if found with an illegal gun; that’s one of the new stipulations under the amended firearms act recently passed by the house of representatives. The act repeals and replaces the firearms bill of 1967, and addresses both the legal and illegal firearm regime, ascribing far more radical penalties for breaches to the aforementioned.

However, before the amendment is ascended into law, the firearms licensing authority is launching a sensitization campaign to educate people on the new provisions. Director of corporate planning and client relations at the FLA, Beverley Robinson says the campaign will be informative and engaging. Robinson says the campaign is expected to aid in deterrence, hence much will be done to target all Jamaicans.
