The Court of Appeal has quashed the conviction of the first man sentenced under the new Firearms Act.

Dennis Mundell was arrested in 2022 in relation to a 2020 murder. He was apprehended in possession of an unauthorized firearm and unauthorized possession of ammunition. He was sentenced to four years and three months for each offense.

The sentence resulted in uproar, given the minimum sentence under the new act is 15 years.

The matter has been remitted back to the High Court division of the Gun Court for appropriate charges to be determined and laid against Mundell.
