Fire erupted at the Riverton Dump late last night sending thick smoke throughout sections of the corporate area. Firefighters were alerted and rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze. Our news team was greeted on Thursday with the all too familiar sight of firefighters, still trying to combat the blaze.
Executive Director at the National Solid Waste Management Authority Audley Gordon explains what transpired at the dump. The executive director indicates these kinds of fires are specifically dealt with by having topsoil to cover them. He notes heavy-duty equipment and trucks are moving materials in and out of the dump. Gordon adds the main concern is to contain the smoke which may affect communities in the vicinity of the dump.
