Education Ministry Responds to Education Learning Loss

Executives in the Education Ministry on Tuesday, October 12, fielded myriad questions in Parliament’s Public Administration and Appropriations Committee, (PAAC) meeting. This as the committee continues to assess the recommended spends of the additional sums for education in the supplementary estimates tabled in Parliament. Chief on the agenda was the learning loss being faced by the nation’s children since the start of the pandemic.

During the sitting of the PAAC meeting, concerns were raised regarding the 120,000 students of the school population that were unaccounted for since the onset of the pandemic and funds that were invested in the various intervention programs implemented by the Ministry.

Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry, Dr. Grace Mclean sought to provide an update on the Ministry’s door-to-door intervention slated to commence next month. The trained personnel will also be collecting data through an app that will be created. In the meantime Chief Education Officer, Dr. Kasan Troupe explained the 120,000 students that were unaccounted for in the last school year.

The question of vaccination was also raised as it relates to engaging students during the door-to-door intervention and face-to-face learning. Dr. Mclean outlined the procedures the Ministry will take.
