Education Minister Fayval Williams and her team were prominent guests during the concluding day of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, JTA, Conference. During the event, participants underscored the urgent requirement for comprehensive compensation reform, particularly in light of the substantial emigration of teachers. However, the Minister’s address steered clear of this topic, opting instead to highlight the achievements of her ministry.
While a global trend of teacher migration and shortages is evident, the President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association contends that Jamaica’s predicament is exacerbated by the perceived inadequate remuneration of local educators. Speaking on the third day of the 59th Annual JTA Conference on Wednesday, Leighton Johnson urged the Education Minister to exhaust all possible avenues for revitalizing the education sector. In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Education Ministry is also advocating for educators to brace themselves for certain legislative adjustments. These adjustments encompass stringent guidelines for devotional activities and the rescission of a policy mandating restrictions on dreadlocks and locs.
