Dr Peter Phillips says Jamaica is “more than ready” to become a republic. This step would mean removing The Queen as head of state and having supreme power and sovereignty.

Questions have resurfaced about Jamaica transitioning into a republic state since Barbados has taken the step of cutting ties with its former colonizer, England on Tuesday.  The discussion is largely centered around whether Jamaica is ready to take such a step. Former opposition Dr Peter Phillips says he is disappointed Jamaica is not already a republic.

Speaking with CVM LIVE on Wednesday, Mr. Phillips says efforts to nudge Jamaica in that direction have been underway for nearly twenty-five years.

He says the move to become a republic has been stalled due to difficulties in deciding on factors crucial to the process; and that the constitution has played a role in the delay since it requires consensus between both major political parties.
