Downtown Kingston Street Renamed After Indian Activist

The President of India joined the Mayor of Kingston and other dignitaries at the Renaming Ceremony for a section of Tower Street, in Kingston on May 16. The street is being renamed to ‘Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’ Avenue to give recognition to the legacy of an Indian activist whose work impacted the lives of millions around the world.

Dr. Ambedkar is said to have introduced progressive ideas for the social and economic empowerment of the depressed classes into the Indian constitution. His work motivated and inspired the people towards the goal of removing inequality, and is being praised for transforming the lives of millions of people. President Kovind compares Ambedkar’s fight for amending inequality, to that of Marcus Garvey’s, as their work transcends nations.

Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams says the street was renamed to give recognition to Ambedkar’s legacy. The seminal moment follows a resolution passed by the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation ahead of the President’s visit. This year marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between Jamaica and India. Watch the report below:
