Several of the Jamaican students who were stuck in Ukraine in the midst of bombs and gunfire at the outset of the war with Russia have received assistance from the Diaspora to return to school.
A few months ago, the diaspora pledged to assist in providing scholarship and job opportunities, as well as emotional support, and based on what we understand, they have fulfilled their promises. Months later, the over 20 Jamaican students who were trapped in the battlefield that is now Ukraine, amid the initial stages of the conflict with Russia, have recently been assisted financially by members of the diaspora.
The students who had to flee the eastern European nation in the middle of their studies, told our news team upon their arrival home, that they were heartbroken. They said the war robbed them of their future and expressed confusion about their next move due to financial restrictions. However, CVM LIVE understands that recently, several of those students have been offered scholarships to enroll in other institutions, in order to continue their studies.
Head of the Diaspora Crime Intervention and Prevention Task Force Dr. Rupert Francis says they’ve also assisted other students with receiving some much-needed emotional support. One student has confirmed that he has benefited from the diaspora’s intervention. He tells CVM LIVE they have reached out to colleagues of theirs who are mental health professionals to provide mental health support. They have also reached out to a few schools in the United States on the student’s behalf to provide assistance as well as share other opportunities.
