The recent fatal stabbing incident at the Kingston Technical High school a week ago has resurfaced the conversation of violence in schools. Opposition shadow Minister for Education Damion Crawford notes the underlining issue in the nation’s schools, is an insufficient number of guidance counselors and social workers. Crawford highlights part of the problem is students coming from backgrounds, lacking proper parental guidance.

He laments deans of discipline are also a small percentage. The Shadow Minister adds the violence intervention programs implemented by UNICEF among other organizations are not the answer, noting that the mental well-being of students should be the focus. A recent surge in school violence has resuscitated the conversation around the topic, particularly in light of the fatal stabbing incident at the Kingston Technical High School.
